St. Augustine’s Oldest House dates to the early 1700s and is open as a historic museum.
Similar but less commercial streets branch in all directions, and once past the busy hubbub, you’ll discover flower-draped, brick-paved streets lined by elegant historic homes and walled haciendas. Open gateways offer tantalizing glimpses into secret courtyards and gardens, and colorful flower baskets hang from second-story balconies decorated with ornate wrought iron.
You should definitely take a tour of the Castillo de San Marcos, whose walls twice sheltered residents when their town was attacked and sacked by marauding British-backed troops in the 1700s. Also worth a visit is the Oldest House on Charlotte Street, which dates to the early eighteenth century, and the Colonial Spanish Quarter, a living history museum with carefully reconstructed historic houses where period-costumed interpreters re-enact the daily activities of early Spanish St. Augustine.
